Omar has been with the company for nearly a decade, allowing him to hone in on his leadership style. Armed with an old-school background and new-school sensibilities, Omar uses his connection with his team to be a good leader.

“Being in leadership, my team often reaches out to me for problem solving. What they don’t realize is they’re actually helping me to become a better manager. One of the things I’ve learned many years ago is to lead by example. One of the mantras within my team is ‘just as well as I can lead, I also can follow.’”

Omar’s team is a diverse mix of voices, experience levels, perspectives, and generational sensibilities. Their differences have turned out to be a great asset as Omar strives to bring them closer together to maximize their potential.

“I lead a diverse team. It’s a mixture of all backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities. What I try to do is get everybody connected and allow them to feed off each other and bring out the best in them.”

Being a leader and mentor has taught Omar that hoarded knowledge could lead to stagnation as team members pursue different roles and new heights in their careers. He is very intentional in encouraging his team to grow and learn within their roles, and to share that knowledge with others.

“One thing that made an impact during my career was realizing how important it is to have a mentor. Someone who will give it to you straight and not just tell you what you want to hear. I often position my people for growth. I’m a teacher. I believe the more I can teach and train someone else, the more opportunities there will be for them to move on more quickly.”
